GATCHINA
Catherine II offered Gatchina to G. Orlov, and for him, the architect A. Rinaldi built a magnificent hunting castle. After the death of Orlov, the villa returned to Catherine II , who offered it to Prince Pavel Petrovich.
In 1790 the meadow before the palace was converted into a military parade ground, while ditches were dug up and drawbridges were built. In 1851 the bronze statue of Pavel I, work of the sculptor I.Vitali, was put onto the parade ground.
