MIKHAILOVSKIY (INZHENERNY) ZAMOK

This castle was built in 1797 for the emperor Pavel I in a record time. Works did not stop even at night. The construction plans were devised by V. Bazhenov, who was assisted by V. Brenna and K. Rossi.

The four facades of the castle are all different. The upper floor is made of red and grey stone, while the lower floor is in granite. The monument of Peter I stands opposite the castle.

In the 19th century the castle housed the College of Engineering, where the brothers Dostoevsky studied .

Today, part of the collections of the Russian Museum can be found in the castle, where exhibitions are now held.
